The monument of Adam Mickiewicz
the Cracow students' tribute to the Bard
On the Main Market Square in Cracow, at the exit of the Cloth Hall towards Sienna Street the monument of Adam Mickiewicz (1798 - 1855) is located. The writings of the poet who was never in Cracow in his lifetime, were appreciated only after his death. In 1890 his ashes were brought from Paris to Cracow and laid down in the crypt on Wawel.
The idea of raising a monument of the Bard in Cracow was initiated by the students of Cracow in 1879. Contests for the design of the monument were announced. In 1881 and 1885 the designs by S. Dykas won, however, they did not wait till their implementation. In 1898 another contest was conducted, and the winning design by sculptor Teodor Rygier was put into effect. The ceremonial unveiling took place on 16 June 1898, in the hundredth anniversary of Mickiewicz's birthday.
The monument presents the poet standing on a high granite pedestal, surrounded by four figures on the steps. They represent the Homeland (from the face), the Science (on the right), the Poetry (on the left) and the Courage (from the side of the Cloth Hall). The inscription on the pedestal says: "To Adam Mickiewicz - The Nation".
The monument was destroyed on 17 August 1940 by the Nazis occupying the city. After the war (1946) part of the figures were found on a scrap yard in Hamburg and on their basis the monument was reconstructed. The unveiling took place on 26 November 1955, on the hundredth anniversary of the poet's death.
Currently "Adas" is the most frequent place of meetings of Cracovians and tourists. Each year on the name-day of Adam Mickiewicz, December 24th, the flower-girls of Cracow place bunches of flowers at the monument.
